@XN0R “…A new designation of “Spiritual Crisis” and “Drug induced Psychosis” to differentiate this aspect?”
No, these two men are very much of the scientific persuasion in regards to the brain( Any mention of “mind”, a verbal, is merely deflective and moot.). There is no mention of “spirituality” anywhere, as it should be, if these discussants are to have any currency in this shared critque. Psychiatry par excellence is a soulless enterprise; as a biologistic and reductive enterprise.
I am no statistician, but I needn’t be, to understand that no science has been brought to bear on any drug-psychosis connection. Rather, this blip in the radar is just that, and not much else- Psychiatry is intransigent to change from without, and a visit to the library of any unversity will support this opinion . I am, however, convinced of the agitating, hypermanic effects of some drugs! I don’t see the brakes being applied on this pre-emptive drugging any time soon.
@whiff1962 – ok, I was wrong about that. So, if you’ve taken them then you know how horrible they are. My main gripe is that no alternative was offered, and also a proper consultation was not affected to determine the circumstances of my particular experience. I think they are bringing in a new designation of “Spiritual Crisis” and “Drug induced Psychosis” to differentiate this aspect?
@noonsplace you don’t understand that is a good thing. that means you don’t need to consume as much to get the medical benefits that you need. better the green, better the medicine. check this out. poor diet and physical inactivity kills more people than marijuana. marijuana – zero deaths!
@whiff1962 – “entrenched practices” that cause untold suffering to those who were either forced into taking them (like me), or are mislead by so-called “experts” (read “pharmaceutical sponsors”)… the “wheel” is not the issue – it’s how you look after the engine. Once in a while you get a flat, does that mean you should severely restrict the engine? Sledgehammer versus foot pump… it seems you prefer the former (probably never had to take them yourself).
@XN0R If you run through some other of my posts, you will see my reference of this “new left” psych critique as something like the reinventing of the wheel: one still comes out with a roughly rounded object that spins on a central axis. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing new under then sun, and the psych profession literature still touts the wonders of pharmaceutical “treatments”. These left-leaning health Commissars, needless to say, are no challenge to entrenched practices.
@whiff1962 – I didn’t have a choice, here in the UK you can be “sectioned” for whatever reason (I didn’t eat or sleep for 4 days)
Not to inquire about the circumstances of my particular experience was a major failing, doctors and the rest of them. Also, I don’t do drugs. I had a “Kundalini Awakening” based on a deep meditation, which no one knew about until a year or so ago.
I “self-medicate” (I prefer the term “suppliment”) with gingko, lecithin, saw palmetto and ling zhi (reishi ganoderma)
Mr. Whitaker accepts the biological model of mental illness. Moreover, he states the view that those theories explaining mental illness are to a great degree “marketing statements” (fair enough), and that psychiatry, in cohoots with the big pharma, sold this to the public. Q: If Mr. Whitaker believes-and has said-that mental illness IS a physical illness (disorder), then, where might such a theory exist to explain the 300 + discreet mental illnesses (disorders) listed in the DSM? A: In faith!
Why not sue the regulatory mechanisms that failed to do its appointed job? You took a mind altering medication, one that alters the “normal” brain state, and like ignorance of the law not being exculpatory, your choice to have taken the drugs was ultimately your decision. If you were “medically” incarcerated for your supposed psychosis, would you sue the doctor(s), or seek to have coercive psychiatry reformed? Your call.
Clearly, Mr. Whitaker’s political views bleed into his left-leaning style of “anti-druggism”. There surely are no truly good drugs or bad, however, with cannabis, which is but a plant, the history differs. The politics of the plant, and its symbolic capital, on either side of the political divide, is contentious. I can’t understand this particular brand of left-leaing “anti-drug” critique. Ultimately, Mr. Whitakers position will “expose” nothing, certainly not the myth of mental illness.
(cont.) are usually transient and easily controlled by the “seasoned” toker. Yes, I, too, do infrequently get a little squirrely when smoking weed, however, the positive attributes-something Mr. Whitaker does not address (what of medical marijuana and PTSD and depression?)-are well worth it!
@MopDMTBARTLthanks mop! on the mj, i wish that were true, about THC, but check out recent research on cannabis psychosis–for some people it is worse than deadly and it iS addicting, despite the current trend in downplaying this. (Some vegetation IS poison, and that one is for more people now than ever because today’s cannabis is grown to have higher amounts of THC than a generation ago.) PS ur probably right about the cookies, too!
@noonsplace ur right except w/ THC. thats the #1 medicine of all time. Fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds & cannabis. all vegetation. herb bearing seed. just like in the bible. the essence of life. zero deaths. more peeps have OD on water. can’t on THC. cookies harm me more than cannabis.
I was put on Zyprexa in 1997 for a “stress induced psychosis” and have tried a few alternatives over the years. I am now diagnosed as “paranoid schizophrenic”, yet the initial trigger was a kundalini awakening – a spiritual experience. I have recently begun to supplement a minimal dose with natural foods and I have noticed improvements in mood, memory and concentration after feeling like a zombie for years. I’d like to know if I can sue Lilly for supplying a drug “not fit for purpose”…?
Thanks–Great info! This is a very clear explanation and the most important section of your interview. I hope people would understand this also applies to self-medication such as antihistamines, thc (mj), otc sleepers and misused herbals, as well.

Zyprexa = Drug Induced Psychosis
